Resin & paving

Sloping driveways: is resin or block paving better?

Block paving with raised planter on a sloping front garden

From Marple and Romiley to the Pennine side of Oldham and Tameside, a lot of drives round here are on a slope. That changes how you plan a drive. Grip, where the water goes and how the surface is held in place all matter more.

Both resin and block paving can work well on a slope. Here's what to think about.

Grip

Block paving gives decent grip thanks to the texture of the blocks and the joints. Resin-bound has a slightly textured stone finish, and on steeper drives an anti-slip grit can be added to the top. Either way, avoid a glossy wet-look sealer on a steep drive.

Where the water goes

On a slope, rain runs downhill fast. With block paving, we usually put a channel drain across the bottom or in front of the garage to catch it. Resin-bound lets a lot of water soak through, but on a steep drive some will still run down, so the bottom still needs thinking about. You don't want it running into the garage or the house.

Holding it in place

Gravity is always working on a sloping drive. Block paving needs strong edging set in concrete, and on long or steep drives a concrete haunch or restraint partway down helps stop creep. Resin needs a solid base and properly fixed edges so it doesn't crack where the slope changes.

Laying resin on a slope

Resin is trowelled by hand, so it can be laid on slopes, but very steep drives make it harder to get an even finish. It's a job for someone who's done plenty of them.

Ice in winter

Any drive on a hill can get slippy in a frost. Keep it clear of leaves and moss, keep the drains clear so water doesn't freeze across it, and use a plastic shovel on resin. Our winter care guide has more.

Steps, paths and handrails

If the drive is steep, a separate set of steps or a gentler path to the front door can make life a lot easier, especially for older visitors or in icy weather. Matching the steps to the drive makes the front look finished.

Which would we pick?

It depends on the slope, the drainage and the look you want. On very steep drives we often lean towards block paving with a good drain at the bottom, but resin with an anti-slip finish works well on many slopes.
