Winter care for driveways in Greater Manchester

Manchester winters are more wet than wild, but months of rain, falling leaves and the occasional hard frost still take their toll on driveways. A little attention between October and March keeps your drive safer and helps it last.
Clear leaves promptly
Wet leaves are slippery and can stain resin and block paving. They also clog the pores of permeable surfaces and channel drains. A quick sweep each week through autumn makes a real difference.
Keep drains running
Check channel drains and gullies are clear so water can get away. Standing water that freezes is a slip risk and can make small defects worse.
Tackle moss and algae
Shady drives can turn green over winter. Brush them regularly and use a cleaner suitable for your surface when the weather allows.
Snow and ice
Use a plastic shovel rather than a metal one, especially on resin, to avoid scratching the surface. De-icing salt is widely used on driveways; sweep up leftovers once the thaw comes, and check with your installer if you're unsure what suits your surface.
Watch for frost damage
Water getting into cracks and freezing can open them up. If you spot new cracks, sinking or loose blocks after a cold spell, get them looked at before they spread.
