Resin & paving
Tarmac vs resin vs block paving: a driveway comparison

Tarmac, resin and block paving are the three surfaces we're asked about most. Each has its strengths. This quick comparison should help you decide what to talk through at your survey.
Tarmac
A dark, hard-wearing surface that's well suited to larger drives and heavy use. With crisp edging it looks smart and tidy. Standard tarmac isn't permeable, so it needs proper falls and drainage on front gardens.
Resin-bound
Smooth, seamless and permeable, with a huge choice of natural stone colours. Low maintenance with regular sweeping. Needs a sound base and careful installation in the right weather.
Block paving
Classic and versatile, with patterns, borders and colour mixes. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid for repairs. Permeable versions are available, or it can be laid to drain to a lawn, border or soakaway.
At a glance
- Most modern look: resin
- Most design options: block paving
- Most practical for big, busy drives: tarmac
- Naturally permeable: resin-bound (and permeable block systems)
- Easiest to repair in patches: block paving
Don't forget gravel
Gravel driveways are attractive, free-draining and great value, especially with a weed membrane and stabilising grids to stop stones moving.
